But when everybody’s honest is when the lights are down and the movie’s playing, and you can literally see them in the dark laughing, smiling, leaning forward. And even if the lights come up and they say, “I didn’t like it,” I believe how they were when the lights were down.
According to the musician Brian Eno: You’re a completely different person as a maker than you are as a listener. That’s one of the reasons I so often leave the studio to listen to things. A lot of people never leave the studio when they’re making something, so they’re always in that maker mode, screwdriving things in – adding, adding, adding. Because it seems like the right thing to be doing in that room. But it’s when you come out that you start to hear what you like.
Maker mode lies. In the room, adding always feels right.
So leave the room and give the idea some oxygen.
When the lights go down, trust what people do before you trust what they say.
