Swede Dreams

A telling table in the recent report, Mobile Matters: The Impact of Mobile Games for Europe, commissioned by King.

Exploring the economic contribution of the mobile games industry across Europe, page 11 spotlights Sweden, Spain and the UK and their respective creator economies:

Country Revenue GVA FTEs GVA / revenue GVA / FTE Revenue / FTE
Sweden €630m €154.9m 2,410 24.6% €64.3k €261.4k
Spain €722m €103.2m 2,670 14.3% €38.7k €270.4k
UK €895m €236.5m 5,060 26.4% €46.7k €176.9k

Sweden has lower total revenue than Spain and the UK in this table, but far fewer FTEs than the UK and a much higher GVA/revenue ratio than Spain. It's a productivity powerhouse, generating €261.4k revenue and €64.3k GVA per full-time employee.

The striking thing is how much value it captures per worker. That's what owned IP, live ops and global distribution look like on a consultant's spreadsheet.

Here is what it looks like when a much bigger country starts building the whole stack.

Owen Mahoney on X:

Just got back from China. It had been 6 years. A lot has changed and it helps to be on the ground to detect the signal. Current estimate for size of domestic market is 750M gamers.

But that’s hardly the most interesting part:

Most conspicuous was the optimism. A lot more than Genshin and Wukong is on the way.

If you're interested in what happens next for the Western games industry, you should read Apple in China, or consider why China is the AWS of manufacturing.

The important question is not where the players are.

It is where the capability stack is.
